SS 304 and SS 316: The Two Most-Specified Grades
SS 304 is the workhorse austenitic grade — it's what most customers default to for general industrial, fabrication, food-processing and engineering work because it balances corrosion resistance, formability and cost.
SS 316 adds molybdenum to the mix, which is what gives it stronger resistance to chlorides and more aggressive environments — coastal installations, marine equipment, chemical exposure. If your application sees salt air, chlorides or harsher process chemicals, 316 is usually the right call over 304.
The low-carbon variants — SS 304L and SS 316L — exist specifically to reduce carbide precipitation during welding, so they're the grades to specify when a component will be welded and corrosion resistance at the weld matters as much as the base material.
